Photo Manipulation - Digital Art. What The Heck Is It!

I am frequently asked about the term "photo manipulation."  People look at the fine art prints of my photography and think they are ink drawings, or watercolors - anything but photography.

"The Enola at Paris Landing" is frequently mistaken for an ink drawing, but it is actually an artistically manipulated digital photograph.

"The Well House at Paris Winery" is mistaken for a watercolor because of it's painterly look, but it is actually a digital photograph.

The "digital" part is easy.  It's digital photography instead of photography using film.  Film photography can also be converted to digital.  When you scan a photograph into your computer, it becomes digital. Artwork, such as watercolors, ink drawings, paintings of any sort can also be converted to digital by scanning them or photographing them and then scanning the photograph.

You probably see manipulated images all the time on the covers of magazines, particularly fashion magazines.  Photo manipulation is also known as "photoshopping."

Per Wikipedia: With the advent of computers, graphics tablets, and digital cameras, the term image editing encompasses everything that can be done to a photo, whether in a darkroom or on a computer. Photo manipulation is often much more explicit than subtle alterations to color balance or contrast and may involve overlaying a head onto a different body or changing a sign's text, for examples. Image editing software can be used to apply effects and warp an image until the desired result is achieved. The resulting image may have little or no resemblance to the photo from which it originated. Today, photo manipulation is widely accepted as an art form.  For more of this article visit Wikipedia here.

In my case I  use different filters, adjustments, colors, etc. to alter the image.  Just as an oil painter looks at a scene and uses oil paints and brushes on canvas to create an artistic interpretation of that scene, I use Photoshop and eventually print my finished interpretation of the scene on archival paper with archival inks.

Perhaps these before and after samples will help.

An original, untouched, digital photo of one of the fishing piers at Paris Landing State Park.  I became obsessed with these piers a few years back.  You can see at lot of them here.

This was my first interpretation of the scene - reved up the drama with some filters, enhanced details and color, and borrowed some clouds from another one of my photos.  I take lots of photos of  just clouds just for scenes like this.  I like it okay, but it just didn't have the look I wanted.   So ....

In "Pier 2, Image A" I took out the clouds, reversed the colors, played with the colors a lot and finally arrived at a much more dramatic and artistic impression of the scene.

On the lighter side, photo manipulation can be used for fun.

Like taking a cute photo and making it 4 times as much fun.

Or creating a memorable collage.

Or to create photos of your friends whacking giant golf balls.

Photo Work

I love the looks of the Rice Barn down behind T.F. Rice and Co.  Cindy Rice took this photo the other day.  It really is picturesque but .... that tree has always bugged me.  So I just took it out.

The following was originally posted on July 12, 2011.   A special thanks to Paris! Magazine for writing such a nice article about this in their June 2012 edition.

I know you ask sometimes, “Where does she get these ideas?” Well, this is how “Elvis at the Paris City Auditorium” came about.

During the North Poplar Street Yard Sale last month, my Aunt Jane took me on a tour though some back yards. There was a sign she wanted me to see at the old Paris City Auditorium. The sign had something to do with Elvis.

We traveled down the driveway of Carol & Kenny Doster. We passed this Peace Sign.

Then we passed this really big paw print.

Did you know Bigfoot lived on North Poplar??
Then we came upon the old Paris City Auditorium.

It was a little sad to see it this way. According to Visit Downtown Paris - “This building was used for everything from basketball games to concerts. In its hey day of the 50’s and 60’s, everyone from Elvis to Jerry Lee Lewis to Flatt and Scruggs performed there. There are a million memories and songs permeating that building!”

We went inside.

There was a little old ....

And some new ...
And then,
I saw this.
And ... well, I became inspired.
So, I took this photo ....

And turned it into this.

Then I added the Elvis sign I had seen inside....

and put it on the front porch to get this.

And then I really got carried away. It just needed a little more Elvis. I won’t keep you in suspense anymore. This is the final product.

Hope you like it. I’m adding it to my “Windows On The Square” series.

Prints are available in the Paris/Henry County area at Jack Jones, Merison's and T.F. Rice & Co.
Online, you can order a limited edition print here.  The edition is limited to a maximum  of 20 prints.  Size:  7" x 8.752" printed on archival paper with archival inks.  This is for the print only (no mat).  $20.00 plus $3.00 shipping.

Happy Easter!

In honor of the Easter Bunny  .... some of my favorite bunnies.

Anne's Rabbit
... just loves purple Homestead Verbena

Flopsy and Mopsy live in my backyard.
Spring, when the Phlox blooms is their favorite time of year.

I found this little bunny hiding out at Homestead Gardens last year.
Apparently he really loves Petunias.

This is my very favorite.  Our granddaughter, Addie with Flopsy and Mopsy.

All of these images were snapshots taken with an inexpensive little point and
shoot camera and then enhanced a little bit by me in Photoshop.

Hope you have a Happy Easter!!

Once Upon A Time ... Photo Restoration

Original Photograph

Once upon a time ...

There was a beautiful woman who got all dressed up in a beautiful dress to go to a military ball with her Prince Charming.  A photograph was made and put away into a photo album so that sometime down the road she and her children and her grandchildren could all look at it and see the beautiful dress and know what a special night it had been.

Unfortunately, the photograph was placed in one of those albums with the sticky pages and plastic page covers ... which eventually turn yellow and will not let go of your photographs.

The original photograph was only about 2 inches wide, pretty small.  It was sent to me to see if I could make it a little bigger.  So this is what I did.

Restored photo

I cleaned it up, dropped the old background and put in a new one more appropriate for such a regal lady.   And then ....

Color Tinting
I color tinted it.

I love this restoration. If you need to have an old photo restored please email me for details.

What a photo can say.

Sometimes you don't need fancy cameras or software to get just the right photo.  Sometimes its just luck and sometimes it's the subject. My sister Anne snapped this photo of my great niece, Elle a few weeks ago.  And I mean, she just pointed the camera and snapped the photo.  But ... it's a fabulous photo and it says it all.

Merry Christmas!

The Dinghy, Image C

Had a question the other day about “The Dinghy, Image C.”  They had seen it on one of my websites and wanted to know, “Why the C?”   Well, it’s a little complicated. Let me start at the beginning.

Here is the original photo.  It’s the dinghy for the marina down at Paris Landing State Park. It’s just a metal boat without a motor they would use to paddle around when they needed to get between the docks. This was just a quick snapshot and later, when I opened it on my computer, I realized I really got lucky with the composition. I think the original  looks pretty good as it is, but you know me … I just have to play with it.

So the first one I came up with looked like this.

"The Dinghy, Image A"

This later became known as “Image A.”  I really liked it, but I really wanted the blue to be just a little different shade. So while I was experimenting I came up with a completely different color …

Brown.

"The Dinghy, Image B"

Which I also really loved and had to save it also for my permanent collection as “Image B.” Then of course, I was still looking for just the right blue and finally came up with

"The Dinghy, Image C"

Image C which has just the right shade of blue and a little golden brown also. So, in the end, I liked Image C the best, but I also really loved Image A & B, and kept them all.

Here is a little detail of one of the things I like so much.

It’s all those little squiggles of texture.

Hope you like it too!
