Tulip Boat Revisited

This boat is one of my favorite scenes here at Paris Landing.  It's not my boat, but I wish it was.    The owners keep it planted with blooming flowers all during the growing season.

Here are a couple of photos from previous years.

Spring! At last!

I just checked the weather forecast for the next 10 days and I think Spring is finally and really here!  I love it when the trees put on their fresh green leaves.

And the Dogwoods bloom!

Tomorrow

"Purple Spring"

Well ... tomorrow is the big day.  T.F. Rice & Co. re-opens after a long and bitterly cold winter.  And I can't wait.  I've restocked a lot of my popular prints, moved most of my original paintings here, and created some new, playful paper jewelry.

Hope you come visit us!

Bee Happy!

Bee Happy!

Spring is here.  The flowers are popping out!  The days are getting longer and warmer (thank goodness!).  And I'm excited that T.F. Rice & Co. will be having their "Spring Fling" soon and opening for the season.

This painting, "Bee Happy!" is one of my newest paintings.  It's painted with acrylics on a 10" x 30" gallery wrapped canvas.  The sides are painted red - no frame is necessary.  I took it down to T.F. Rice & Co. today along with a few other new paintings for their grand re-opening on April 16th.

I will also be teaching acrylic painting classes at T.F. Rice & Co. and "Bee Happy" will be an inspiration piece for a future class.  You can see a few of the classes we will be offering at this link.

Hope to see you soon at T.F. Rice & Co.  In the meantime ...

Happy Trees

A special "Thank You"  to Carmen Watson at the Olive Pit Restaurant in Paris, Tennessee.    Carmen purchased three of my "happy tree" paintings today.  Many times I don't know or meet the folks who buy my art.  I've never sold three original paintings in one day, much less to the same person - and I got to meet the buyer - so - this really made my day.

Painting Titles:  "Happy Tree In Blue & Gold",
"Happy Tree In Red With Sunflowers", and "Happy Tree In Red"

The paintings were on exhibit in the Tennessee River Fine Arts League exhibit at Lee School and at the Windsor Candle Company when Carmen noticed them.   I delivered them to her today at the Olive Pit Restaurant where we discussed different places she could hang them.    One of the walls already has a sign on it which says "Live, Laugh, Love" and Carmen commented that she wanted to hang one of them with the sign since the colors were so cheerful and made her "happy".   It was then that I pointed out they were all "Happy Trees" and told her their titles.

Thank you Carmen!  I hope you and your customers enjoy these paintings as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Note Cards

Did you know you can purchase all the art listed on my online gallery as personalized note cards.

Someone from Germany just bought a set with my "Paris Moonlight" artwork on them.    The back of each card has my name on it as "the artist" but they had the inside personalized.  Wonder what they said?

The folks at Fine Art America make it really easy to order cards just the way you want them.

Someone from Jackson, Tennessee bought a set with "The Picnic"a scene of Paris Landing,  on them.

Note cards are a neat way to share the art of your favorite artist (me!) and to collect small prints.  You can buy them one at a time or in sets of 10 or 25.

New Release

Finally finished this last night.  I'm really enjoying painting playfully.  This is supposed to be a whimsical view of the McWherter Bridge at Paris Landing - just around the corner from my house, but I suppose it could be any bridge.

To purchase orginal, please contact me.
Prints in a variety of sizes and formats.

Hope you enjoy it!

Special Format Jack's Pool Room Just For Merison's

Delivered another one of these to Merison's the other day.  This is a 16" x 20" (standard frame size), black mat with cut outs for all three Jack's Pool Room prints, the title and the artist's name (me).  And to add a little drama and make it even more special, the prints are in black and white on archival art paper.  Need I say - it would make a great Valentine's present for someone.

Merison's is the only place on the planet where you can buy this arrangement.   That's right - the entire planet.   This format was created especially for them because they are such special folks.

Merison's is a locally owned store that sells furniture, electronics and appliances.  They also display and sell art created by local artists on their walls which makes them pretty special to me.  And they have pretty cool employees who don't mind kicking their heels up and having a little fun with eccentric artists like me - as you can see in this photo on the right.

You really need to see this format in person to appreciate it so hurry on over to Merison's and look at all the art and furniture, electronics and appliances.

And if you don't live anywhere near Paris, Tennessee - my neighborhood - you can order the individual prints of Jack's Pool Room here.  They just won't be in this special formatted mat - but they are still pretty cool.

A Gallery Wall

So what do artists do with all those paintings they generate when they are in-between galleries or still in the works?   It would be nice if artists could sell their paintings as fast as they paint them or have them all farmed out to galleries.  But it just doesn't work that way.   So in the meantime .... rather than me continuing to punch nail holes in my studio wall, my husband created a gallery hanger for me.

The hanger which is about 1/2" x 1 1/2" is painted to match the wall and is hung with a very small gap between it and the wall.  The paintings are then hung from the wooden strip on fishing line.  You can't see the fishing line in this photo and you can hardly see it if you are standing right here in the room with it.

I've been pretty busy this winter painting.  Several of these are not finished - like the big one right in the middle.  And some are for painting classes at T.F. Rice & Co. when it opens in the Spring.

The "laugh" sign is there just to remind me that I need to do that at least once a day.

I love my new gallery wall!

A Bridge Going No Where

There are a lot of unique things about Paris Landing, but one of the things we have that you may not find anywhere else is a bridge that goes nowhere.

So ... here's the scoop.

A unique view of the new McWherter Bridge seen through the old Fitzhugh Bridge
by Paris Landing artist Lee Owenby

It's scary to think this old bridge was actually two lanes.
Just imagine two big old trucks passing each other on this.

The old bridge is located inside Paris Landing State Park.

About My Jewelry

Several years ago I found another outlet for my creativity.  Making jewelry!

I'm a little bit of a hoarder so this also gives me an opportunity to use up all those scraps of watercolor paper, buttons,  old jewelry, metal and other doo dads that I just can't seem to throw away.

And because the jewelry is made from recycled items - it is usually unique and one of a kind  - just like the special women in your life.

You can find my jewelry locally at T.F. Rice & Co. where they are having an open house this Saturday, November 23rd.  Hope to see you there.

Varnish

Varnishing new paintings today.

I only varnish when I'm as sure as I can be that I am really finished with the painting.  Varnish enhances the painting - makes the colors a little brighter and deeper, helps protect it from sun and aging and it makes it easier to dust and keep clean.

These will be going to Merison's and T.F. Rice & Co. next week.

In The Works

This is what I'm working on now.

More Happy Trees!!!!!!

It's not finished yet.  It needs more contrast and maybe some yellow at the top.  And then of course, I'll need a title for it.  This is on a 10" x 30" gallery wrapped canvas, which means you don't have to frame it - woo hoo!

Coming Soon! Fall!

It's September!  One of my favorite months because I know before the month is over, it will start to look like Fall in my neighborhood.

I took this photo a few years ago over at Sweetvalley.  I love all the Fall colors in it, the leaves scattered across the road ... and the curve in the road that makes me want to see what's around that corner.

I love Fall at the Lake.

First Time Painter

One of the things I really like about helping people paint (sometimes I hesitate to use the word "teach") is when they tell me  ...

  • how much fun they had
  • and how much they learned
  • and that they want to paint some more.

That's the way it went today.  We only had one student for our Saturday morning class.  It's  Saturday of the Labor Day weekend and most folks around here are out playing in Kentucky Lake.  But Debra Zemanek came to paint a sunflower - so it was just the two of us.  She told me what colors she wanted in her painting and kind of how she wanted it to look and then .... she told me she had never painted anything, ever before.   Nothing.  Zero. Nil.
Debra Zemanek with her first ever painting.

I love this sunflower that I helped her paint.  No, it's not a Rembrandt, but I love the whimsical, loose style of it and her color choices.  And for her first ever painting, I think it's fabulous!  But what I really, personally like is that before she left she told me ...
  • how much fun she had
  • and how much she learned
  • and that she wants to paint some more.

Teaching People How To Paint

I never dreamed that someday I would be teaching people how to paint.  I never dreamed I would teach people how to do anything.  Teaching just isn't in my DNA.  But apparently I can teach them a little about painting and a lot about having fun at it and experimenting.

And this makes me happy and apparently it makes them happy too - as you can tell from the above photo.

Partnering with Cindy Rice at T.F. Rice & Co. to have 2 hour painting on canvas sessions has turned out to be a challenging and fun creative outlet for me.  You may have seen these classes in larger cities.  If you haven't, just Google "canvas painting classes."  They are everywhere because they really are fun.  In these classes the students actually finish a painting on canvas by the end of the 2 hours.  We use wrap-around or gallery styled canvases where the painting goes around the sides, so no frame is necessary. It's ready to hang.  Cindy provides the space and all the tools and supplies for the classes.  I provide the ideas, instructions, how-to's, and get to inspire people to be creative.  I get to have all the fun!

Sometimes the finished art all looks pretty much the same from a distance, but if you get in close -

You can see the difference in each painting.
We all had a lot of fun making fluffy white clouds in "Bridgeview."

And on other times - no two paintings look alike.  This class was "Still Life on a Black Canvas."

It was all about painting on a black canvas.
Lot's of fun and very individual.

You can find out more about our creative and fun painting classes by clicking on the button
at the top of the page that says "Painting Classes" or following me on Facebook.

Photo Work

I love the looks of the Rice Barn down behind T.F. Rice and Co.  Cindy Rice took this photo the other day.  It really is picturesque but .... that tree has always bugged me.  So I just took it out.
